“Williams' First World Champion!”

This drawing captures the indomitable Alan Jones sweeping to the 1980 World Drivers' Championship driving the Williams FW07B Cosworth - Williams' first World Champion car.

Designed by Patrick Head, Neil Oatley and Frank Dernie and launched in mid 1979, the FW07 was Williams' first ground effect F1 car. It thrust Williams from a promising side show to a consistent front-runner of real quality from the off, with Jones winning 4 races in late 1979 to narrowly miss out on the 1979 Drivers' title to Ferrari's Jody Scheckter. Being virtually untouchable in 1980, Jones and Williams cantered to the 1980 Championships - the only competition coming from Nelson Piquet in his Brabham BT49. The FW07 won the Constructors' Championship again in 1981, this time with Carlos Reutemann narrowly losing to Piquet in the final round. Jones' competitiveness was hampered by fuel pickup issues caused by the combination of his aggressive driving style and the extreme cornering G-forces his car could produce under his command making the fuel move so violently in the fuel tank! The FW07 truly established Williams as a competitive force in F1, and we all know their history now as one of the most decorated F1 teams in history.
