McLaren M7A With Bruce McLaren at The Wheel

“McLaren's First Winner”

This drawing captures the legendary Bruce McLaren driving his own car to his team's first F1 victory at the 1968 Belgian GP. 

1968 would be a watershed season for the fledgling McLaren team, in only its third year of F1 competition. The M7a was a masterpiece, being the first F1 car to use the "bathtub" style chassis construction that would become de rigeur until the late 1970s; it was made of aerospace-grade aluminium, so was stronger and safer than its rivals; and it pioneered aerodynamic developments that were soon copied by rivals. The M7a was so good that it delivered McLaren - both team and driver - their first F1 victory as well as its first 1-2 finish (Hulme-McLaren) at Watkins Glen later that year. McLaren finished the season an unthought-of 2nd place in the Constructors' Championship.
