“Graham Hill Airborne in a Lotus”
This drawing captures Graham Hill launching his Lotus 49B at Flugplatz during the 1969 German GP held at the Nurburgring.
The German GP in 1969 delivered Mr. Monaco’s 50th points finish in F1 in what proved to be the start of the evening of his F1 career. As defending World Champion, Hill struggled to match the rising star that was his teammate, Jochen Rindt, in an increasingly uncompetitive Lotus. Despite his waning competitiveness, Hill delivered a masterful demonstration of his experience, patience and race craft to deliver an unexpected 4th place at the “Green Hell”, cementing his reputation as an all time great of the sport. This race reflected Hill’s 1969 season perfectly: the great man could still deliver even in ageing machinery and a hotshot teammate.
