Graham Hill, the defending 1968 World Champion and a star driver for Gold Leaf Team Lotus, finished second in the season-opening South African Grand Prix. He then suffered a heavy crash in the Spanish Grand Prix at Montjuïc Park when the high rear wing on his Lotus 49B failed; teammate Jochen Rindt had a similar (and more serious) failure shortly afterward that led to a collision with Hill’s abandoned car. 
At Monaco in May 1969, the CSI (the sport’s governing body at the time) banned high wings after practice due to these and other structural failures, forcing teams to scramble with lower aerodynamic setups. Hill still took the win in the Lotus 49B (chassis R10), ahead of Piers Courage (Brabham) and Jo Siffert (another Lotus 49B), after race leaders Jackie Stewart and Chris Amon retired with differential issues. 
The 1969 season overall was tougher for Hill; he finished seventh in the Drivers’ Championship as Jackie Stewart dominated in the Matra. The Lotus 49B (an evolution of the groundbreaking 1967 Lotus 49 with the Cosworth DFV engine as a stressed member) remained competitive that year despite the rapid development of rivals and the wing controversy.
