Jim Clark, the legendary Scottish Formula 1 driver and two-time World Champion (1963 and 1965), had a remarkable but tragically short association with the Lotus 49.The Lotus 49, introduced in 1967, was a groundbreaking car designed by Colin Chapman for Team Lotus. It was the first F1 car built around the revolutionary Ford-Cosworth DFV V8 engine, which became one of the most successful power units in F1 history. The car debuted at the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort in June 1967, where teammate Graham Hill took pole, but retired early. Clark took over the lead, set the fastest lap, and won the race convincingly—marking the debut victory for both the Lotus 49 and the DFV engine. In 1967, Clark drove the Lotus 49 in several races and secured four Grand Prix wins :
  • Dutch GP (Zandvoort) – debut win
  • British GP (Silverstone)
  • United States GP (Watkins Glen)
  • Mexican GP
Despite reliability issues (including several retirements), he finished third in the Drivers' Championship. In 1968, Clark won the season-opening South African Grand Prix at Kyalami on New Year's Day—his 25th and final F1 victory. This was his last race before his tragic death in April 1968 during a Formula 2 event at Hockenheim.Clark's time in the Lotus 49 showcased his extraordinary talent: smooth, precise driving that made the car look effortless, often dominating when reliability held. He had around 10 outings in the 49 across his career, completing most with podium finishes and winning half of them. The combination of Clark's genius and the innovative Lotus 49 (which later evolved with aerodynamics like wings) helped pave the way for Lotus's success, including Graham Hill's 1968 title. The car remains iconic, with surviving examples (like chassis R2, which Clark drove to three 1967 wins) highly prized and featured in concours events.
