Juan Manuel Fangio started the 1956 Monaco Grand Prix from pole in this Lancia-Ferrari D50 but had an uncharacteristically messy race. Stirling Moss (Maserati) led from the first lap to the finish.
On lap 2 Fangio spun at Sainte-Dévote. While recovering he forced teammates Luigi Musso and Harry Schell (Vanwall) into the barriers; both retired. Fangio continued but drove raggedly. On lap 32 he hit the harbour wall and bent a rear wheel. He pitted and handed the car to Eugenio Castellotti (whose own Ferrari had already retired with clutch trouble). Around lap 54 Ferrari called in Peter Collins, who had been running a strong second. Fangio took over Collins’ car, passed Jean Behra for second, and closed on Moss. On the final lap he set the race’s fastest time, but Moss won by just over six seconds. Fangio and Collins shared second-place points. 
Fangio later said the ragged style was simply the quickest way to drive that particular car around Monaco that day. The result left him leading the championship after two rounds. He was classified as with 2nd and 4th on the official results.
