Graham Hill, the two-time Formula 1 World Champion (1962 and 1968), drove the Lotus 49B for Gold Leaf Team Lotus during the 1969 season. This car represented an evolution of the groundbreaking Lotus 49, which had introduced the revolutionary Cosworth DFV V8 engine in 1967.
The Lotus 49B featured refinements including aerodynamic updates like front winglets or spoilers, an upswept tail, and (at times) high-mounted rear wings on struts—marking F1's early, experimental foray into downforce generation. It was powered by the reliable Ford Cosworth DFV 3.0-litre V8 (producing around 420–440 hp), paired with a Hewland/Lotus 5-speed manual gearbox. The car weighed about 501 kg, with a wheelbase of roughly 2,413 mm.
This drawing captures Hill's standout moment at the Monaco Grand Prix on May 18. Driving the Lotus 49B (often shown in the striking red-and-white Gold Leaf livery with a Union Jack), he secured victory—his fifth win at Monaco (a record at the time) and what proved to be his final Formula 1 Grand Prix win and podium. It was a classic street-circuit masterclass from "Mr. Monaco," who started strongly and capitalized on the twisty layout where the Lotus's handling shone. This race also highlighted the era's wild aero experiments, with high wings appearing (and sometimes being banned or restricted after failures elsewhere).
Only 50 of these numbered giclee prints will be made available, each comes with a Certificate Of Authenticity signed by the artist Mark J Davey.
