The Ferrari F2001's 9/11 tribute at the 2001 Italian Grand Prix (Monza) is one of Formula 1's most memorable and poignant gestures of respect.

ContextThe September 11 terrorist attacks occurred on a Tuesday. Just five days later, on Sunday, September 16, 2001, the Italian Grand Prix took place at Monza—Ferrari's home race. The event went ahead amid heightened security and a somber atmosphere, with many questioning if it should proceed at all.

The Tribute LiveryFerrari (Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro) ran both their F2001 cars in a special, stripped-down configuration:
  • All sponsor logos were removed (normally covered in branding like Marlboro, etc.).
  • The cars were essentially plain red.
  • The nose cone was painted black as a mark of mourning.

This was a deliberate, silent tribute to the victims and the American people, reflecting Ferrari's close ties with the US. It stands out as one of the rare times a modern F1 car ran largely sponsorless.

Michael Schumacher drove chassis #213 in this livery, with teammate Rubens Barrichello in the other car. The visual of the bare red Ferraris on the grid was striking and widely noted.

Race Outcome
  • Juan Pablo Montoya (Williams-BMW) won the race.
  • Rubens Barrichello finished 2nd.
  • Michael Schumacher finished 4th.

Schumacher had already been dominating the 2001 season in the excellent F2001 (designed by Rory Byrne with a potent Ferrari V10), and he went on to win his fourth Drivers' Championship that year. The Monza tribute didn't change the competitive result but left a lasting emotional impact. LegacyThis moment is still celebrated today as a classy, understated act of solidarity in a sport often dominated by commercialism. Scale models of the "9/11 tribute" F2001 (especially Schumacher's) are popular among collectors. Ferrari also showed further respect at the later US Grand Prix with American flag elements.

It remains a powerful example of motorsport pausing to honor a larger tragedy.
