The Ferrari 312B2 was an evolution of the 1970 312B, featuring a revised flat-12 engine (shorter stroke for higher revs, around 470 hp at 12,600 rpm), updated aerodynamics, and other tweaks by designer Mauro Forghieri. It weighed about 558 kg with liquids and used a 5-speed gearbox.
At the 1971 German Grand Prix on August the 1st at the daunting 22.8 km Nürburgring Nordschleife, Clay Regazzoni drove the #6 Ferrari 312B2. He qualified well (around 4th) and finished third behind Jackie Stewart (Tyrrell) and teammate François Cevert, completing the 12-lap race in about 1:29:52.8. Mario Andretti took 4th in the other Ferrari entry.
This was a solid result for Ferrari on the challenging "Green Hell" circuit, where the flat-12's power helped in the long straights and fast sections, though the Tyrrells dominated overall. Regazzoni scored 4 points for 3rd place.
Regazzoni had a strong season with the car (including podiums elsewhere), but the 312B2 was generally outpaced by the more nimble Cosworth-powered cars like the Tyrrell. Ferrari still showed competitive flashes, especially at power tracks.
Iconic images from the event often show Regazzoni's red Ferrari attacking the Nürburgring's bumps and elevation changes, the is my artistic depiction of it getting airborne over crests, capturing the raw danger and excitement of 1970s F1 on that legendary track.
Regazzoni, the Swiss driver known for his aggressive style and Ferrari loyalty, helped keep the team in contention during a transitional period. The 312B2 lineage continued into 1972 before the 312B3 arrived.
