He drove for McLaren, then Tyrrell from 1974 to 1976, later Wolf, and finally Ferrari, where he won the 1979 World Championship. At Tyrrell he was paired with Patrick Depailler. He was blunt about cars he did not like, and the P34 became the one he liked least.

The P34 (Project 34) was designed by Derek Gardner for Ken Tyrrell’s Elf team. The idea was aerodynamic. Rules limited how wide the front wing could be, so the big front tyres stuck out into the airflow and created drag. Gardner hid four tiny 10-inch front wheels behind the wing, kept two normal rear wheels, and hoped for less drag plus more front rubber on the road. It used a Cosworth DFV V8, Goodyear tyres, and windows in the bodywork so the driver could see where the little front wheels were.

It debuted at the 1976 Spanish Grand Prix. Depailler qualified third on its first outing, well ahead of Scheckter still in the old four-wheeled 007. Scheckter got a P34 from Belgium onward. The high point was the Swedish Grand Prix at Anderstorp: Scheckter won from pole, Depailler finished second. That is still the only Grand Prix win by a six-wheeled car, and Scheckter is the only driver to have done it.

This drawing sees the P34 at the British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch that same year, car number 3 in Elf blue. Scheckter started eighth and finished second, about 16 seconds behind Niki Lauda’s Ferrari. The P34 was strong on smooth, fast tracks and weaker on bumpy ones such as Brands Hatch, where one small front tyre could be in the air while the other on the same side was loaded. Even so, 1976 was a real success: Scheckter third in the drivers’ championship, Depailler fourth, Tyrrell third in the constructors’ standings, with a stack of podiums.

Scheckter never warmed to it. He left for Wolf at the end of 1976 and later called the P34 “a piece of junk.” Ronnie Peterson replaced him for 1977. Goodyear barely developed the special 10-inch fronts, the revised car got heavier, and the results faded. Tyrrell dropped the concept for 1978. Other teams sketched six-wheelers, including cars with four wheels at the rear, but none of them won a race.

Originally rendered in pencil by fine artist Mark J Davey, this piece is reproduced using specialist, fine art giclee printing methods.

Limited to 50 numbered examples and is shipped with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the artist.

Overall size including border: 470mm x 347mm (13.66"x 18.5")

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0806/6737/7989/files/TyrrellP34-JodyScheckter-1976Brandshatch-GicleePrintWithBorderDetails.png?v=1791297297
https://markjdaveyart.com/products/tyrrell-p34-with-jody-scheckter-at-the-wheel-limited-edition-giclee-prints-with-coa
