It used an aluminium monocoque, a Cosworth DFV 3.0-litre V8 (around 430 hp), a Hewland five-speed gearbox, and inboard rear brakes as the main technical change from its predecessor. Only three chassis were built. He finished second on the car’s debut at the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami. After that the year turned grim: Hulme suffered serious methanol burns to his hands while practising for the Indianapolis 500, and Bruce McLaren was killed on 2 June while testing a Can-Am car at Goodwood. The team skipped the Belgian Grand Prix. Hulme returned and still scored consistently — third at the British and German Grands Prix, plus further points finishes — to end the year fourth in the Drivers’ Championship with 27 points.
