Birkin wanted even more power from the already-thunderous 4½ Litre Bentley and, against W.O. Bentley's advice, fitted a supercharger at the front of the engine. He got the power he wanted, but the supercharger did exactly what W.O. warned it would do: it blew the engine up, and Birkin never finished the race.
